Our Story

It started with dinner, not donations.

In 2013, our founder began taking street children in Nairobi out for meals — not money — and asking them why they ended up there. That question became a weekly feeding program, then a Sunday church community, then a registered organisation. Today it’s a structured path from the street back to family. “RHEMA” means a spoken word — a message with power, reflecting our belief in not only meeting physical needs, but speaking hope and restoring dignity.

Timeline

A decade of showing up

  1. 2013

    A question, not a handout

    Our founder began meeting street children in Nairobi — sharing meals, listening, asking why they ended up there instead of just giving money.

  2. 2016

    From occasional to weekly

    Sunday services with street children and a Tuesday feeding program became fixed commitments, cooked from home and carried into the streets.

  3. 2018

    Street Church Ministry launches

    Formal activities began at Central Park, Nairobi: evangelism, counselling, talent shows and clothing drives, backed by a growing circle of churches and volunteers.

  4. 2021

    Officially registered

    On 10 September 2021, Rhema Compassion Organisation was formally registered — giving the work structure, accountability and room to scale.

  5. 2022

    Outreach scales up

    Weekly street outreach grew to reach roughly 150 children per month.

  6. 2023

    Officially launched

    Rhema Compassion Organisation held its official public launch, broadening its mandate to serve all in need across the community.

  7. 2023

    Education sponsorships expand

    The number of students supported through school sponsorships grew by 40%.

  8. 2024

    Health partnerships begin

    Three mobile medical camps were run across Nairobi through a new health-outreach partnership.

  9. 2025

    Family empowerment pilot

    Fifteen caregivers completed skills training and received startup kits to build sustainable household income.

Educating communities on basic health care, guidance and counseling skills for orphans and vulnerable children.

Raising, securing and utilising funds for the attainment of the Organization's objectives.

Success So Far

Signs the work is holding

  • Reformed street children — most of them boys — have gone on to become self-employed cart operators and porters across Nairobi's CBD, easing a well-known challenge among young men in the city.
  • Graduates of our partner rehabilitation centre have been equipped with trade skills that now make them self-employed and self-reliant.
  • What began as a street-children ministry has expanded to serve vulnerable families and individuals across the wider community.
  • Rhema Compassion Organisation held its official public launch in December 2023.

Looking Ahead

Narrowing our focus, deepening our care

From 2024, we are focusing our direct-service programs on street children between the ages of 3 and 10 — feeding, educating and clothing them — while we work to acquire a dedicated centre for holistic education. That centre will care for children's spiritual, physical, psychological, emotional, social and mental needs under one roof.

Programs

Nine programs, one path forward

Every program feeds into the next — meeting a child on the street is the beginning of a structured journey back to family, school and stability.

Family Reintegration

Most children on the streets have a family somewhere. Our social workers trace relatives, mediate the conditions that led to separation — poverty, conflict, neglect — and walk families through counseling before a child returns home. We stay in contact for months afterward to make sure the reunion holds.

Feeding & Clothing

Weekly feeding days meet children in their own environment — under bridges, in markets, at street corners — with hot meals, clean clothing and hygiene supplies. For many children, this is the first consistent, trustworthy relationship with an adult in years, and it's the entry point into every other program we run.

Holistic Education

We cover school fees, uniforms and supplies for children at risk of dropping out or who've never enrolled, pair them with mentors, and offer vocational training for older youth who need a faster path to income.

Rehabilitation

Life on the street leaves marks — trauma, substance dependency, broken trust. Our rehabilitation program pairs licensed counseling with structured routines and skills training, giving children the tools to reintegrate into school, family and community life for good.

Health & Wellness

We run mobile medical camps and maintain referral partnerships with local clinics so children and families get treatment before small problems become emergencies — plus ongoing health and hygiene education to prevent them recurring.

Child Rights Advocacy

We advocate for vulnerable children with local authorities, schools and community leaders, and work to prevent exploitation and abuse through awareness, reporting pathways and direct intervention when a child is at risk.

Skills & Entrepreneurship

For older youth and caregivers, we offer vocational skills training and small-business startup support — seed capital, mentorship and basic financial literacy — so families can build income that outlasts any single donation.

Community Engagement

Lasting change needs a community, not just an NGO. We run local awareness campaigns with churches, schools and neighborhood leaders to build a support network that keeps watching over vulnerable children after we've moved on to the next family.

Resource Mobilization

None of the above happens without consistent resources. We run transparent fundraising campaigns, cultivate donor and corporate partnerships, and publish how funds are used so supporters can see exactly what their generosity makes possible.

How we protect the children we serve

  • All staff and volunteers undergo background checks and safeguarding orientation before working directly with children.
  • Children and images are never published without documented guardian or institutional consent.
  • A clear reporting pathway exists for any concern about a child’s welfare, with defined escalation to leadership.
